Goals & Objectives

Objectives:
- To increase the awareness and acceptance of intelligent data analysis and data mining methods in medical community.
- To foster scientific discussion and disseminate new knowledge on AI-based methods for data analysis and data mining techniques applied to medicine. To promote the development of standardized platforms and solutions.
- To provide a forum for presentation of successful intelligent data analysis and data mining implementations in medicine, and for discussion of best practices in introduction of these techniques in medical and health-care information and decision support systems.

Recent activities:
- The IMIA WG on IDA and DM has organized the twelfth workshop on Intelligent Data Analysis in Medicine and Pharmacology. This workshop has been held in Amsterdam on July 8th. We had more than fifty participants, from Europe, Canada and United States. 18 papers and an invited talk have been presented in the workshop. Such workshop was the largest in the IDAMAP history.
- A Special Issue of the Journal of Biomedical Informatics on IDA in Medicine will be published in this year. The issue is edited by the workshop chairs, Niels Peek and John Holmes. The Special Issue contains several different contributions that deal with methods for gathering new knowledge using a selected data analysis approach, including a review by R. Bellazzi and B. Zupan on Towards knowledge-based gene expression data mining.
- The next chair and co-chair of the IMIA WG has been elected, and their names will be proposed to the next IMIA Assembly. The next chair will be Niels Peek, University of Amsterdam, and the next co-chair will be John Holmes, University of Pennsylvania, USA. They will take the chair starting from the IMIA Assembly of 2008.

Future Activities:

The IDAMAP 2008 location and chairs will be defined before the Assembly in Brisbane.
The working group will focus on specific topics of interest for the scientific community. In particular, the following issues will be explored:

- the exploitation of predictive data mining in clinical medicine.
- knowledge-based functional genomics
- IDA of molecular phenotypes
- Data Mining models for the assessment of clinical risk
- temporal data mining in medicine and bioinformatics.

The working groups web site will be further enriched, in order to offer a list of most relevant publications, technical notes and recent results to the general audience.
There will be a transition to the new chairs which will define the 2008 activities with the old ones.
