National Membership
For any country, IMIA will only permit one society,
group of societies, or organization to become a National Member
of IMIA. Such a body must be representative of the national activities
within the field of medical informatics in that country.
National Member Categories
Corresponding Members
Where a country has an appropriate
body eligible for National IMIA Membership, it may apply for Corresponding
IMIA Membership for the time of the application process. It may
retain this name until approval of the National Membership, or when
this fails, up to a maximum period of three years.
Observers
Representatives from countries which are not Members of IMIA,
and who are engaged in or planning significant medical informatics
activities, may, by a majority vote of the General Assembly, be
accepted as Observers at IMIA meetings for a maximum period of three
years.
Correspondents
Individuals residing in a country that does not have an appropriate
body eligible for national IMIA Membership may apply to become a
Correspondent.
Required Information:
Applications must be made in writing and include
the following:
- The name and legal status of the society
or organization
- The address and other contact information,
including website address, (where applicable).
- The by-laws or terms of reference of the
organization, including the qualifications required for membership.
- The number of members of the organization,
and the population of the country.
- A brief narrative describing the activities
of the organization.
- The name, title, organization, address, telephone,
fax and e-mail address of:
- the President or Chair of the organization
- the proposed representative to IMIA,
and,
- where it pertains, the Secretariat
or administrative officer of the organization.

Process:
Upon receipt, the application will be:
- Reviewed by the Executive Director for completeness.
- Reviewed by the Vice President of Membership
of IMIA, and submitted to the Board of IMIA along with a recommendation
for acceptance or otherwise, along with the annual membership
fees assigned to the organization.
- Reviewed by the Board of IMIA for submission
to the next meeting of the General Assembly of IMIA.
- Where the Board has approved the application,
the organization may be granted Provisional Observer status
- Voted as to acceptance by the General
Assembly at their next meeting; upon acceptance, the organization
will be granted National Member status.
Fees:
National members are required to
pay an annual fee; the amount of the fee is determined on the basis
of the World Health Organizations assessment scale and ranges
from 170. to 1450. CHF (Swiss Franks) per year. Fees are payable
on a calendar year basis.
No fees are levied for Observer or Corresponding
members or correspondents.
